Blog #6: 01/17/23: Aviation Blog - News - Near Collision at JFK Airport
Good evening! Today’s aviation news features a near-collision at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York; Welcome back to another episodic blog of Brooke In The Air!
Today’s (01/17/2023) blog features Aviation News! We’re back to news in commercial aviation!
Reported in the last few days, ”shit” was the first reaction according to an air traffic controller who noticed a collision between a Delta Airlines 737, and a much larger American Airlines 777 flight, per Live ATC.
This was, again per Live ATC and a pending investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) this was entirely the fault of the American Airlines 777' flight crew, who was cleared to cross 31L at Kilo, not 04L.
This investigation is ongoing. The controller saw what was happening and immediately called the Delta flight on the radio to reject the takeoff as the American 777 was taxiing across the same runway. The takeoff was rejected successfully, and a lot of lives were saved. Unfortunately, the passengers didn’t realize what happened until they checked social media the next day, and the Delta 737 flight didn’t leave until the next morning.
The passengers were provided overnight accommodations courtesy of Delta Airlines for their flight now the next morning, the same day that the FAA said it would begin the investigation. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is also currently looking into the issue and possible disciplinary action recommendations against the American Airlines’ crew for likely negligence.
Whereas Delta Airlines said it would work with all aviation authorities to the fullest extent of the law to resolve the issue, American Airlines offered no comment, which is very telling in itself.
