Blog 17: 2/13/23: Aviation News: United is having Issues…

United Airlines has been having issues lately, from equipment failures in the air to now, near-crashes. Hi there! Welcome back to Brooke In The Air and another aviation blog. We are four days and a few hours from departure to Los Angeles, but lately I’ve been concerned about a recent rash of incidents across the airline industry, though today we’re focusing on a near-crash by United because no only is it the most recent of the most severe, but I‘m also flying United given my premier status with them and the Star Alliance.

UA 1722’s flight path showing the initial climb out of Maui, Hawaii and the subsequent over 1,500-foot dive, finished by the sudden recovery.

On December 18, yes back in December - which is how long this incident went unreported to media or external authorities, a United Airlines’ Boeing 777-200 operating as flight UA 1722 from Maui, Hawaii to San Francisco, California - technically a domestic service - left Kahului Airport in Maui at 2:40 PM local time and began to climb out normally en route to cruising altitude. At an altitude of about 2,200 feet, the Boeing 777 widebody began a steep dive at an estimated rate of descent of 8,600 feet per minute, falling to just 760 feet above the Pacific Ocean before the crew managed to regain control of the flight and continued on to San Francisco as if nothing ever happened.

This incident was reported internally and a casual report was filed with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) per internal United regulations.

This incident was swept under the rug by the pilots. United Airlines, the FAA, and air traffic controllers.
